We need a talented developer who wants to make something they can be proud of!

About us

Bright Little Labs is building a kids media giant for the 21st Century. We make all sorts of kids’ stuff which promotes critical thinking, computer science and equality. Our flagship story is about Detective Dot - an 11-year-old coder who is on a dangerous mission from the C.I.A. (Children’s Intelligence Agency). Kids can join the CIA and carry out personalised activities on and offline. We’re on our way to publishing more books, mobile games and expanding our digital platform. We also just partnered with Turner (who own Cartoon Network!) so we’re making cartoons and games too.

THIS IS IMPORTANT: Our character - Detective Dot - is a third-generation British Indian girl. We want to work with people who believe in authentic character creation and we’re actively looking to work with people with lived experience of our characters and her family.

THIS IS ALSO IMPORTANT: We’re now hiring a creative team to help turn Dot into games and cartoons. We’re actively looking to work with people who have lived experience of our character's culture, and her family life. We value merit, initiative and values over qualifications or industry experience. All of our roles (designers, producers, animators etc.) are here. Please share or apply, and help us to create something amazing.

About the role

We're looking for a talented front-end developer to help us to help us build the best interactive digital experience for our audience of curious and incredibly imaginative kids aged 7-11. The role will also see you take responsibility for our customer facing websites where we sell our Detective Dot products.

You'll be joining a small but growing team which includes games creators, developers, designers and illustrators. This is a great opportunity for someone to have a big impact in a small team, working on stuff that aims to have a positive impact in the world.

Key Responsibilities

We’re building an online platform serving up games, animations and online missions to our “agents” within the Children’s Intelligence Agency. We’re growing to build a seamless online experience for our users, with surprise elements of interactivity, user generated content + communication.

We’re right at the beginning of this project. Key decisions on how we’ll put this together will be down to you. You’ll be responsible for:

  • Working with our back-end team on the technical design of our platform.
  • Contributing to the setup and development of a CMS.
  • Providing guidance on front-end design (e.g. best practices).
  • Electing development tools and frameworks (e.g. Sass, ReactJS).
  • Developing containers/libraries to serve our game and animation content.
  • Integrating with back-end services (e.g. RESTful APIs).
  • Setup and management of front-end interface testing (e.g. functional testing).
  • Management of version control (e.g. Git).

We offer

  • Impact - an awesome role helping to define the future of Bright Little Labs. Plenty of responsibility and autonomy from day one.
  • Exposure - we're a high-ish profile project and we work with exciting people and partners.
  • Feel good factor - you’ll be working on a project at the heart of equality, education and technology
  • Flexibility - family and other commitments are important. We’re happy to offer flexible working arrangements to make things work for everyone.
  • Fun - we’re building a top-secret spy agency. If we told you more, we’d have to kill you.
