We Need a 🚀🚀🚀 Freelance Web Developer LIKE RIGHT NOW ⏰

About us

Bright Little Labs is building a kids media giant for the 21st century. We make kids’ products that promote critical thinking, computer science and equality - and are now building our first web app.

We started on Kickstarter with our flagship story Detective Dot - an eleven-year-old coder who is on a dangerous mission from the C.I.A. (Children’s Intelligence Agency). Kids can join the CIA and carry out personalised activities on and offline. Now we need your help to bring these digital activities to the masses.

We started on Kickstarter, reached 30 countries, got Cabinet Office backing, and have won a few awards. Next up: we’re launching in 22,000 schools and making cartoons and games. Boom. We’re growing fast and we need someone with interactive web magic to help us bring our brand to the masses. If you believe wholeheartedly in the power of stories and toilet humour to inspire the next generation, get in touch.

About you

You are a big kid and you love games, toys and cartoons. You have experience with HTML5/CSS3/JS and building creative interactive websites. You’re comfortable working in a startup environment (less structure, more freedom) and turning interactive prototypes into web-friendly products. You love parallax scrolling, interactive backgrounds, and funny GIFs.

What you’ll be doing

We’re building a brand new CIA hub and we need your help. You’ll be working closely with our amazing team of developers and designers to help us get this launched. You’ll be responsible for:

  • Setting up our serverless architecture - we use firebase as our database and backend and you’ll need to create/modify our schema there and build any API calls to be used by our web product as well as our mobile app (being built in unity)
  • Building the web experience
  • Transforming our design vision into a digital solution. We care a lot about how it looks + interacts so we want someone with 🔎 👀 attention to detail who cares deeply about the quality of animations + little interactions
  • Testing - we’re looking for someone who is comfortable testing their own code before handing it over
  • Managing our existing marketing website including detectivedot.org and our existing web product ciakids.org

Technical requirements

  • Good level of HTML5 and CSS3 with knowledge of polyfills for backwards compatibility
  • SCSS experience & BEM
  • Solid understanding of JavaScript and utilising common design patterns and performance optimization
  • Demonstrable background in building templates from design and UX documents
  • Source control (GIT)
  • Experience using Front end Frameworks (Bootstrap...)
  • Experience with: serverless architecture, in particular, Google Cloud and Firebase Single Page Applications, in particular, React JavaScript testing frameworks, in particular, Jest testing serverless architecture and Single Page Applications

We offer

  • An awesome experience helping to define the future of a very exciting brand that promotes diversity
  • Exposure - we’re a high-ish profile project and we work with exciting people
  • Flexible working arrangements - the role is part-time or freelance for now... Mums, dads + pregnant people, please apply.

Day rate is dependent on experience. Starting immediately in our cosy office in Old Street with the option of working remotely.
