Bright Little Labs

About us

✋🏽 HELLO ✋🏽Bright Little Labs is a kids' media company. We make kids’ books, games, and toys that promote critical thinking, computer science and equality. We launched on Kickstarter in 2016, and partnered with Warner Media in 2018, but we’re still a tiny company.

We’re passionate about the power of storytelling and value diverse identities and experiences, and we’re proud to bring a different sort of story to kids all over the world.

Our flagship story is about Agent Asha and the Children’s Spy Agency. Agent Asha is about 11-year-old Asha Joshi, a coder and secret agent for the Children's Spy Agency. Agent Asha teaches kids how the internet works and secretly covers all the computing concepts from KS1 and KS2 (video about it all here). We have built an immersive spy world around Agent Asha, including activity packs, apps and a CSA website so that kids can join the CSA and carry out their own top-secret missions.

🚨 Please note, we value smart people over experience and qualifications. If you’re not sure you have the “right background”, please apply! 👀

The Role: Children's Book Marketing and Promotions

We launched the first in our Agent Asha spy book series - Agent Asha - Mission Shark Bytes - with Walker Books in the heart of lockdown last year. All planned publicity for the launch was postponed. Now that life is opening up again - including schools, bookshops, and festivals - we are looking for a children's book marketing specialist to help us engage and grow our Agent Asha audience. You'll be tasked with promoting Agent Asha in time for Coding Week in October, and with promoting our Agent Asha gift packs as the best ever plastic-free, screen-free STEM gift for Christmas.

Agent Asha has been well received so far. We’ve been Shortlisted for the Little Rebels Award (radical fiction for young readers) and Nominated for the CRIMEFEST Award for Best Crime Novel for Children (ages 8-12) and have a growing fanbase of kids, parents and teachers, so there’s a great springboard for the right person to spread the word.

About you

  • You love children’s books, especially those which have an educational or philosophical value, and you understand the importance of inclusive storytelling.
  • You’re goal orientated. You know if your ideas have worked because you’ve measured them.
  • You have at least three years experience in designing and promoting children's books campaigns.
  • You have very good communication skills and solid marketing skills, including digital.
  • You’re full of unusual and fun ideas around brand building and audience engagement.
  • You have experience organising events, especially with schools/community
  • You are well organised, and have good attention to detail.

Contract details

This is a freelance position for approximately five weeks of work spread out over two months (i.e. 3 days per week). You'll be working directly with the author and if successful, there may be further work going forwards.

We offer:

  • £200 per day for a total of 25 days work
  • Feel good - you’ll be working on a project at the heart of equality, education and technology.
  • Fun - we’re building a top-secret spy agency. If we told you more, we’d have to kill you.

We're looking to fill this role ASAP.

To apply, please send us a short covering letter, telling us why you're interested in this role, and why you'd be good at it.
